SINGING LESSONS
SINGING LESSONS
Singing lessons are a great way to help you to gain the skills you need to excel as a singer, whether you’re looking to gain control of your voice, extend your range and agility, or simply to build your own confidence!
We use a ‘from the ground up’ approach, meaning that our first focus is on developing the core technical skills that are needed to protect and enhance your voice. These are the kinds of skills that are important to any and all styles of singing. Alongside developing technical skills, we also work with each student to find their particular strengths as a singer and vocal artist, as well as identifying and working through any areas that need further development.
Our tuition programme offers training in both Commercial Contemporary singing (Pop / Musical Theatre / Jazz), and Classical singing. We have spent that past 7+ years developing a fantastic group-training curriculum that has been carefully honed; both within our own Academy, but also through our experience delivering group vocal training in tertiary institutions such as the National Academy for Singing & Dramatic Arts (NASDA), and Vision College NZ, as well as in schools, and in private programmes.
Wherever you are on your journey, we have something for you!
Our Intro to Singing course is a great way to get started with singing training, offering the opportunity to develop your singing skills in a fun, encouraging, small-group setting.
This 8-week course is designed to help you to understand your voice as an instrument and, most importantly, to help you to feel confident using it!
It’s ideal both for beginners, and also for established singers who want to understand how to sing without straining their voice, and how to decide what key / range is best for them, etc.
In our 8 week course we’ll be covering:
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
breath control
understanding and building vocal range
voice strengthening
vocal health
HOLISTIC SKILLS:
physical presentation
microphone technique
learning how to create & sing harmonies
basic theory
Classes have between 6-12 singers, and include 8 x 1hr lessons per term. Our lessons use contemporary songs, and do focus on developing a contemporary sound, but still pull on the fundamentals used in classical, jazz and pop music; meaning that they are suitable for singers of all genres and styles!
We run our 8 week Group Lesson course in Term’s 1, 2 and 3 (no class in Term 4), and they take place on Thursdays, from 6:30pm - 7:30pm at the Arts Centre Of Christchurch (CBD).

Alongside our group training opportunities, for those who are keen to get some personalised training we also offer Private vocal lessons with our Academy Director, Julian Hay (DipABRSM, MusB).
As well as building confidence and enjoyment, Private Lessons are also able to prepare students for:
Contemporary Singing Exams (Trinity Rock & Pop)
Classical Singing Exams (Trinity College London)
Audition preparation
School or tertiary assessments
Solo and group performance
Recording projects
Through private lessons we’re able to tailor an approach that best suits you, so that you are able to set and achieve your own goals as a singer.
Once a year we host a showcase for all our singing students, to give everyone the chance to celebrate their progress in front of friends and family (August/September 2023).
Current lesson availability: Limited (Tuesdays / Fridays only)
Whether you’re from outside of Christchurch, or you just can’t find an in-person lesson time that suits your travel/timetable, we do also offer our Private vocal lessons using the video conferencing programme Zoom. While some things are more easily achieved in the room together, there is plenty that can be delivered in an online format, and we have had great success with online students.
Tailored workshops are ideal for existing ensembles/choirs, school groups, church music teams, community groups… even team-building! We can either offer:
One-off Workshop; or
Group Lesson Programme (8 sessions)
This can be delivered on your own premises, or on site at our vocal studio in the Central City. It’s best to get in touch directly about this option: hello@voicesco.nz
We offer a specific ‘Audition Prep’ package, that includes:
vocal assessment,
assistance with song selection & backing track (if required),
targeted training to help you prepare your audition song ready for delivery.
The audition package is subject to tutor availability, so we recommend getting in touch directly if this is something you’re interested in: hello@voicesco.nz
